Commercial buildings in the UK are one of the main energy consumers in the country. Lighting, heating and office equipment use significant amounts of energy but there are a range of steps businesses can take to make their buildings more energy efficient:
Buildings need an energy management plan that regulates the use of heating, cooling and lighting. This should be optimised to minimise costs while meeting the needs of tenants.
Energy efficient lighting should be installed and controls and sensors used to ensure that lights are only in use when they need to be. Where possible, daylight should be used over artificial light.
Server rooms should be cooled efficiently with fans or located offsite.
Energy efficient office equipment should also be used. Old computers, copiers and other office equipment should be replaced with power saving modern alternatives wherever possible.
As well as the power saving benefits, studies show that employees are happier when they work in a healthy office environment.
